We’ve all seen the explosion in the number of less-invasive surgeries in recent years. Laparoscopic surgery requires the use of longer instruments than traditional open procedures thus changing the relation of the surgeon’s hands to the height of the surgical table.

At the 2001 SAGES (laparoscopic surgeons) meeting a clinical study was presented. It was done to determine the ergonomically optimum height of the surgical table while doing laparoscopic procedures. A height range was determined and it’s quite a bit lower than the range for doing open procedures. Surgeons should be operating with their elbows at their sides, but traditional tables don’t go low enough to allow this. Currently surgeons are either operating with their elbows raised (which is extremely fatiguing to the upper musculature) or they are using lifts or step stools (which is dangerous).
